Unpublished Africa, a platform dedicated to empowering African visual storytellers, is proud to announce the second edition of Unpublished Africa Photography Week. Running from 23–30 November 2024, the event will take place under the theme “Impact in Mind”, highlighting how photography and visual storytelling in Africa can amplify voices, address urgent social issues, and inspire meaningful action.
Photography as a Tool for Social Impact
The “Impact in Mind” theme challenges African photographers and visual storytellers to think beyond aesthetics, using their creative practice as a tool for:
Amplifying marginalized voices
Addressing pressing social issues such as climate change, inequality, and cultural heritage preservation
Inspiring civic action and community engagement
By exploring the intersection of art and activism, Photography Week creates space for a new generation of African creatives who see photography as both craft and catalyst.
Key Highlights of Photography Week 2024
🎙️ Virtual Discussions and Workshops
Participants will learn from leading African creatives and cultural practitioners. Topics include:
Building compelling visual stories
Documentary photography and ethics
Storytelling for cultural heritage preservation
Photography as advocacy
📸 In-Person Community Photo Walks
Led by Leonardo Thomas (Zimbabwe), Tinashe Pawandirwa (Zimbabwe), and Namukolo Siyumbwa (Zambia), the multi-city Photo Walks will run on 23 November, 30 November, and 8 December 2024. These walks encourage photographers to:
Explore their local communities
Capture powerful images
Build creative networks in their cities
🖼️ Impact in Mind Exhibition
To close the week, Unpublished Africa will host a group photography exhibition, showcasing work submitted by African photographers around the theme “Impact in Mind.” This exhibition provides emerging talent with visibility and the opportunity to contribute to the growing African visual storytelling movement.
